Common Electrical Issues & How-To Guides
1. Circuit Breaker Keeps Tripping

- Too many high-power devices (like heaters or kitchen appliances) may be on one circuit.
What You Can Do:
- Unplug some devices and spread them across other outlets.
- If it keeps tripping, give us a call at 703-349-6063 for a professional inspection.
How to Reset a Circuit Breaker:
Only attempt if you’re comfortable. When in doubt, call a professional.
1. Open your electrical panel door (do not remove the cover)
2. Find the breaker in the middle position (tripped)
3. Push it firmly to OFF, then back to ON
4. If it trips again immediately, call us at 703-349-6063
Warning: Never touch wires or attempt repairs. If the breaker is hot or you smell burning, don’t touch it – call us immediately at 703-349-6063.
2. Burning Smell or Scorch Marks
What to Look For:
- Look for scorch marks or outlets that feel warm.
What You Can Do:
- Stop using the outlet immediately and give us a call at 703-349-6063. This could be a serious safety issue.
3. Buzzing or Humming Noises
What to Look For:
- Noise from outlets or switches
What You Can Do:
- Try turning off or unplugging connected devices.
- If it’s a light switch, reduce the number of bulbs or check if the fixture is over capacity.
- If it’s an outlet or switch, turn off the power and unplug any connected items.
- If the sound continues, give us a call at 703-349-6063 to schedule an inspection.
4. Flickering or Dimming Lights
What to Look For:
- Make sure the bulb is screwed in tightly.
- Check if the wattage matches the fixture.
What You Can Do:
- Try replacing the bulb to rule that out.
- If the problem continues, give us a call at 703-349-6063.
5. Outlet Not Working
What to Look For:
- Check nearby GFCI outlets – they may have tripped. Press the RESET button if needed.
What You Can Do:
- Inspect your circuit breaker panel from outside. A tripped breaker will be in the middle position.
- If you’re comfortable doing so, you can try resetting the breaker (see instructions above).
- If the outlet still doesn’t work or you’re unsure, give us a call at 703-349-6063.
How to Test a GFCI Outlet:
This is a simple safety test that doesn’t require any tools.
1. Press the TEST button (you’ll hear a click)
2. Plug in a device – it shouldn’t work
3. Press RESET button
4. Device should now work
Test monthly. If RESET won’t stay in or you notice any problems, call us at 703-349-6063.
Signs You Need an Outlet Replaced:
- Cracks or burn marks
- Plugs fall out easily

6. Light Switch Not Working
What to Look For:
- Test the bulb in a different fixture to make sure it’s still good.
What You Can Do:
- If the bulb works, check if the switch is loose or damaged.
- If you’re unsure, give us a call at 703-349-6063 and we’ll take a look.
7. Outdoor Outlets Not Working
What to Look For:
- These are often controlled by an indoor/outdoor GFCI outlet. Check and press the RESET button if needed.
What You Can Do:
- If that doesn’t solve it, give us a call at 703-349-6063 and we’ll inspect it.
8. Power Surge Protection
What to Look For:
