Keep your home and family safe with regular electrical checks. Use this checklist to spot warning signs before they become dangerous or expensive problems.
Warning Signs to Watch For
- Warm or discolored outlets and switches
- Plugs that fall out of outlets easily
- Flickering or dimming lights
- Breakers that keep shutting off
- Buzzing or humming sounds from electrical box, outlets, or switches
- Burning or plastic smell near electrical items
- Damaged or frayed electrical cords
- Lights dim when you turn on appliances
- Light switches that feel sticky or don’t work smoothly
Safety Do’s and Don’ts
- Test bathroom and kitchen outlets monthly (press test button, then reset)
- Keep 3 feet of clear space around your electrical box
- Don’t plug too many devices into one outlet
- Don’t run extension cords under rugs or furniture
- Never plug extension cords into each other
- Make sure outdoor outlets have weatherproof covers
- Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors regularly
